Indian movie recs and a short poll

If anyone's interested in exploring Hindi movies, I would recommend Dor and Chak De India to start off as two of my favorites.

Dor's a lovely exploration of the relationship between two women, one a very independent North Indian woman, Zeenat, whose husband is scheduled to be executed in Saudi Arabia on charges of murdering his fellow guest worker from India, and the other a young Rajasthani girl, meera, from a small conservative town, the widow of the worker the Northern woman's husband is accused of murdering. According to Saudi law, only a pardon from the widow can save the accused from being executed, and the movie is about Zeenat's search for Meera, and the friendship that develops between the two while Zeenat tries to figure out how to bring up the pardon. There really aren't that many Hindi movies where the unrelated female leads develop such a lovely friendship and that's just about who they themselves are, rather than revolving around a man (even given the reason Zeenat's there in the first place). [Dor means thread, usually in the sense of something like the ties that bind]

Chak De India is about the Indian women's field hockey team and their coach. The coach, Kabir Khan, is a former captain of the men's field hockey team who retired in disgrace (amongst many rumors of colluding with the Pakistani team because he was Muslim) when he missed a goal at a crucial moment, resulting in a loss to arch rivals Pakistan. Scene then shifts to 7 years later, when the women's team is being treated with the general contempt a lot of women's sports face and Kabir Khan comes back resolved to come back with the world cup, even if to most it's a loser team with a disgraced coach. You can see where this is going. Yes, it's an underdog sports movie, and, well, I'm guessing you know what the ending is, but it's how they get there that's always the joy and this is quite delightful. It explores many things that are uniquely Indian and all the characters are interesting in their own way. Worth a watch.

I was wondering about something. I've done commissions for [livejournal.com profile] leahwoof and [livejournal.com profile] villainny, are there other people who would be interested in commissioning me for artwork? They won't be fanart; original artwork, artwork of you or family members etc. are all fair game though. I'll make a more complete post with pictures of stuff I've done later if there's any interest, so here's a poll:

I will get around to paying that as soon as I get rid of these viruses. I've had to close seven pop-ups so far in this comment. >.

That's ok, I can wait. Just make sure you don't get important passwords hijacked :)
