SPN recs

My bigbang art gets posted tomorrow. It's for a lovely story, so I should probably get to finishing all the art soon, huh?

On to the recs:

Art:
Metallicar as a woman by [livejournal.com profile] stereowire, now depicted at the correct age. And further proof that hotness has absolutely nothing to do with how old you are. The coloring is amazing, the tattoo is delicious and the lighting is incredible.

Fic:
I just finished reading [livejournal.com profile] gretazreta's bigbang fic The Accompanist. Here's the summary the author gave:
Dean learned to play the piano at his mother’s knee. Now, fifteen years after her death, his talent for music is a secret he keeps from everybody, especially his father. Stuck in a small town for the rest of the school year, looking after a brother who’s growing apart from him, and training for a future of hunting that he’s not sure that he wants, Dean finds an unlikely confidant in an elderly Jewish man who’s haunted by his own secrets. It’s a year of firsts, hunting alone and falling in love, but when a monster from the tragic past starts wreaking havoc on the people of the town, Dean must come to terms with his own fears and desires in order to save the people he cares about the most.

If you liked the summary, yes, it's that good and better. If you're iffy about the summary, the fic is far superior. I left a slightly incoherent comment probably because of the pesky little tears in my eyes. I loved it so very very much.

[livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang started posting \o/ I'm almost done with my cover and sort of midway through the other picture I'm doing. Lots of Missouri :)
And speaking of bigbang, here's an art rec: go take a look at [livejournal.com profile] machinistm's artwork. I love the cleanliness of the first piece and the mix cover is just lovely.

A few video things:
The sweet: I really like this song from a hindi movie (no, it's not Rahman :)). It's lighthearted, sweet and the settings are very colorful. The video on youtube

The funny: The whole of Colbert's first show in Iraq. This is one of the most hilarious episodes of the Colbert Report that I've seen and I really love that he's there to entertain the troops. Apart from the bit with him doing basic training (which is awesome) the highlight comes when President Obama appears on screen to order General Odierno (Colbert's guest) to shave Colbert's head :D You can watch the full episode here though I'm sure everyone's seen the shaving clip floating around everywhere :) I love this man.

The ugly: David Letterman making misogynistic statutory rape jokes about a 14 year old. Link here. It's awful and completely unfunny. I really don't care to debate about the politics of it (please DON'T, it isn't defensible), making knocked up jokes about a young girl because you don't care for her mother is disturbing and I don't know if I'm more grossed out by the joke or by the fact that the audience laughed instead of booing him for it.

Excuse me while I go rewatch Colbert to get the nasty taste out of my mouth.

P.S: I'm unhealthily obsessed with Star Trek Reboot fandom. Somebody save me!

I loved last night's Supernatural. LOVED. Sam needs to wear more tshirts. And Jensen needs to stop being so unreally pretty. Ok, not really, I just don't know whether it's humanly possible for him to get any more beautiful. And that was one of the funniest hours of tv Supernatural's delivered in a while.

Noah Wyle has taken over my brain. Not only am I bulldozing my way through umpteen seasons of ER, I also watched his Librarian movies. They were actually surprisingly fun, the first one and the third one (Quest for the Spear and Judas Chalice) were especially enjoyable. In Wyle's own words, the movies are what the Indiana Jones movies would be like if Indiana Jones was played by Don Knotts (although I guarantee there's no comparison when it comes to hotness :D). Also, they have cool female leads, especially in the first movie (Sonya Walger and Kelly Hu mmm) who are actually the action heroes. And the ER series finale is next week. I can't wait! [speaking of ER, if anyone has any idea about how I could find episode 2 of season 10 (titled The Lost) please drop me a line. All my google fu has been fruitless :(]

thandie.livejournal.com/tag/vid has the prettiest vid banners I have ever seen. Haven't watched the latest vid, but the older one's pretty nicely done.

It's been a while since I last posted a poll. So:

I posted SPN art yesterday and came to the conclusion that I should probably have a separate tag that's just for images that are red and black, because they're really building up. I also realized I hadn't done an art recommendation post in a really long time. So, here goes: 3 SPN recs, and 1 SGA rec. Go see and leave glowing feedback :)

Recs:
SPN:
Endings by [livejournal.com profile] nargynargy
Nargynargy does an amazing mix of painted and manipulated work. The colors are beautiful and the textures are exciting, but it's the whole mix that's just breathtaking. The atmosphere of the whole thing is fantastic. Go explore her other works, it's more than worth your time. Please note the artwork warnings though.

Untitled art (poster-style) by [livejournal.com profile] famira
Really cool painting style. Not photorealistic with respect to features, but the lighting and coloring is fantastic, and I rather like the way it's different because it seems deliberate. But I think the best part for me is the design, the composition of the whole thing with a really cool background and well chosen type.

Disturbia (vid) by [livejournal.com profile] reen16
This vid is creepily awesome. The vidder takes Rihanna's song and original video of Disturbia and splices in scenes from SPN. The cuts and scene selections seemed perfect to me, and fit in really nicely with the original video, and looked kind of like a music video for Supernatural the movie :D

SGA:
The Woods Are Haunted, Dark And Deep by [livejournal.com profile] astridv
As always, lovely composition and background, with really well done lighting and coloring. The eyes in the background and the splint on Rodney's leg are two of the details that just make the picture for me. The fire isn't half bad either :P

And in some self-aggrandizing news, [livejournal.com profile] maychorian is a sweetheart and made me a thread on the love meme. Thank you and ♥ to all those who are saying such lovely things :)

If anyone's interested in exploring Hindi movies, I would recommend Dor and Chak De India to start off as two of my favorites.

More about both movies )

I was wondering about something. I've done commissions for [livejournal.com profile] leahwoof and [livejournal.com profile] villainny, are there other people who would be interested in commissioning me for artwork? They won't be fanart; original artwork, artwork of you or family members etc. are all fair game though. I'll make a more complete post with pictures of stuff I've done later if there's any interest, so here's a poll:

[Poll #1310196]

I made pumpkin bread and cornbread. They were both very very delicious. Somehow, the two times I've tried to put in a layer of cream cheese in the middle of cake/bread, I've managed to overshoot on the liquid part and so the cream cheese layer never stays as a layer, but becomes a meandering random line throughout the loaf. And that actually looks way prettier and like I meant to do it deliberately, I think I'll continue making the same mistake from now on.

And of course, after a week of making a mix of easy and complicated food from scratch, I burnt a pan trying to boil an egg and a potato :/ I almost went to bed, thankfully I was reading fic where someone was eating an egg and that reminded me about the stuff that I should have taken off the stove, oh, about an hour and 45 minutes ago. Yay for fic with food?

Two SPN art recs:

Nadir by [livejournal.com profile] acerbus_instar (Gen, creepy imagery)
Odd but arresting picture. Very well chosen colors and the starkness of it all is very cool. I'm not entirely sure what it means but it's just visually very cool and lends itself to as many interpretations as you want to give it. Look out for the reflection.

Sketch of Sam by [livejournal.com profile] blynnk (G)
Pencil sketch of Sam. I am generally not a huge fan of simply faithful reproductions of photographs without changing any of the context, but there's something very lively about the lighting/shading and the pencil marks in this picture. There's something a little off about the jaw line, but Sam's eyes and smirky-smile are so well done that the faults are completely overshadowed.

TVland:
Every time I come across an episode of The Legend of the Seeker, I am struck by how completely unengaging it is despite having elements that could have really worked. The cinematography is lovely, the lighting is wonderful, the people are kind of generic but still sort of vaguely attractive, the woman holds her own fighting skills-wise, the camera ogles the guy and the girl equally, and there are attempts at wisecracks. But it's just so earnestly trying and then completely failing to realize how silly it is. There's slow motion everytime someone's fighting, the people leave no lasting impression on you, their personalities might as well be stamped "insert heroic/tragic/romantic cliche here" and oh my god, I cannot stand it when people act like yentas in fic and I really can't stand it when they do it in tv shows and take themselves seriously while doing so.

I might be watching bits of Brothers and Sisters just to see if Rob Lowe is on.

Chuck is still my favoritest thing ever. And I'm still not fannish about it.

I'm hanging onto the Mentalist for now, but I still haven't really figured out if I really like it or not. Simon Baker and Amanda Righetti, however, are very pretty.

Supernatural made me happy. But you know what made me much much happier? Watching videos of McCain and Obama at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial dinner. It was funny, and it obviously wasn't free of any political mocking, but man, I can take this kind of mutual criticism any day, it was sharp and it didn't make me feel like politics sometimes does, i.e. turn off my computer and go to bed forever. Both were hilarious, McCain was very smooth and pretty straight-faced with his delivery, but Obama grinning at some of his own jokes was kind of great too. And I love that they poked fun at each other as well as themselves, and ended with words of admiration for each other, because they should. I also liked Obama's words of appreciation for Hilary and how much fun she seemed to be having.

Here's McCain: Part 1 Part 2
Here's Obama: Part 1 Part 2
(thanks to [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine for the heads up)

Link of amazing grandeur: Pictures of the sun. Seriously, wow.

Random link of absolute cuteness: The subtitle on my lj (grabbed from [livejournal.com profile] toomuchplor's fic Constellation) really truly holds true for this because awwww, it's a chimpanzee cuddling baby tigers! My heart melted like butter on a hot plate.

I made basil chicken last night and it's definitely something I will be repeating again. It was really easy, the main ingredients you need are (obviously) chicken and basil along with garlic, some fish sauce and a bit of chili paste. vegetables are variable.

I walked four miles for the heard-of-but-never-seen-before huge Asian supermarket and it was completely worth it. I have a huge green mango! And lots of squid! And cilantro that looks unlike any cilantro I have ever seen! Someday I will be adventurous enough to buy the rather awful looking sea cucumbers, and rich enough to buy the amazing looking jumbo shrimps.

Pork chops broiled after marinating in garlic, ginger, lemongrass, rice vinegar and soy sauce is gastronomic heaven. To make it all even more amazing, broil some olive-oil brushed yellow peppers on the side. Mmmmm.

I am in TV heaven. SPN is wonderful, Chuck is fun as ever, Bones is entertaining, and I'm enjoying The Mentalist. Re: the last one, how is Simon Baker so hot? How?

A few links:

If you haven't yet been to [livejournal.com profile] paintedspires, run don't walk. there are quite a few creepy cool images up already. Warnings for crack, awesome skills and GORE.

Incredibly cool sketches of celebrities with just a few lines but you can tell who they are right away. Two artists, very different styles and both completely amazing.

Christmas/end of year holidays is still a ways away, but care packages take time. Soldiers' Angels is a wonderful volunteer-led non-profit organization that helps you send care packages and more to men and women who are deployed (and include other services for soldiers and their families as well). Think about it, even if it's just a minor donation.

Check out Bankrate.com's "Safe & Sound" rating system if you're feeling wobbly about your own financial institution.

Craig Ferguson is hilarious 96% of the time, and I want him as a friend. This is him on the election and voting. He manages to be funny as well as make a whole lot of sense. Why is he on so late at night?
