Lorne is running late to a team meeting -- late enough that the boys will be antsy and Yoni will consider himself to have earned the right to be even later next time because he's still gotten there first. And he is going to have to pull rank and not give an explanation because he doesn't want to have to explain that he got stuck in an argument with two of the geologists and it was about mining and not military matters.

"You think Batman'll be able to fix it?" he can hear Suarez asking Ortilla as he comes around the corner to his office.

"I think Batman caused it," Ortilla replies. "So, yeah, he'll probably have to fix it. Or get the Major to do it."

Lorne wants to ask who Batman is -- he suspects it's Sheppard from context (and the knowledge that Charlie Company's long-planned field exercises got postponed, which wasn't Sheppard's fault -- at least not entirely). Plus the fact that he knows what the Charlie marines call Polito behind his back and that's not it. He wants to ask, but he won't because all three marines are looking at him like they are hoping very much that he didn't hear anything they just said. They've been a team long enough that the marines will wait for him inside of his office instead of standing outside of it, but not long enough that he wants to press them into divulging nicknames of senior officers.

"Sorry I'm late," Lorne says as he walks into the room. "Got held up."

The meeting is short -- they have a mission scheduled for Thursday, pack your snivel gear because it's winter there -- and Lorne has precisely half an hour until he has the battalion staff meeting and he missed lunch.

It's not for another couple of weeks that he gets the right moment to ask Yoni who Batman is.

"It's Sheppard," Yoni answers without looking up from the entree he's trying to identify by dissection. The commissary whiteboard said fish fillet, but if that's the case, it's on documentary evidence alone because it doesn't look like any fish Lorne has ever seen. He opted for pasta. "The marines call him that."

"Do I want to know why?"

Yoni looks up from his plate. "Because by day he is the useless, carefree, potentially idiotic boychild Bruce Wayne and by night he is the Caped Crusader, running across rooftops and saving the day."

Yoni tells him all of this with a straight face. Lorne blinks at him.

"If you are about to tell me that they call me Robin," Lorne warns, "Please don't."

*wide awake now* You are awesome as are Yoni and Lorne and Sheppard and anyone who appears in your fic. Yoni's deadpan delivery makes everything funnier. Sheppard would be so chuffed to hear that :D

Sheppard totally would. He'd completely race past the "everyone thinks Bruce Wayne's a ninny" part and focus on the Dark Knight.

Glad it worked. :)

Well, the important part is that Bruce Wayne isn't a ninny. Though Rodney might point out Batman acts like a ninny on purpose. As opposed to some Colonels he could name with weird expressions and strange head tilts.

Or else he'd argue that Bruce Wayne doesn't really exist -- he's just a front for Batman. But, either way, he'd have an awful hard time proving that John is a doof out of calculation and not inherent nature. :)

The marines probably had nicer ways of saying it. :)

But wouldn't that make Rodney Robin? Though maybe Rodney could be Oracle...

The marines are the ones who picked out the name, so they're thinking Rodney is something closer to the Joker. ;)

Since I'm no more together than I was when I commented on today's 5T's:
And he is going to have to pull rank and not give an explanation because he doesn't want to have to explain that he got stuck in an argument with two of the geologists and it was about mining and not military matters.

Oh, yeah, Lorne was a surveyor. hee. :)

Yoni looks up from his plate. "Because by day he is the useless, carefree, potentially idiotic boychild Bruce Wayne and by night he is the Caped Crusader, running across rooftops and saving the day."
Sheppard in a nutshell. And Lorne so is Robin. But ZOMG, what do they call Polito? You can't leave it like that. Yoni is a really smart boy, but why does he keep trying to make his meals more palatable by dispatching them via cutlery? It won't make them taste better, Yoni.

Would you be interested in reading something I have in progress and helping me decide if I should keep going or ditch it? I can email a word doc or put up a you-locked post....

4am! Augh. Forget the tea; this calls for coffee.

I have made a you-locked post! Here (http://mahoni.livejournal.com/184793.html)! Be brutally honest with me, dude.

Hey, there. I am only now catching up with stuff from as far back as October. It's been a hell of a few months, what with RL drama and this move to Chicago. I've come across the notice where you friended me then popped off. If you're still up for getting to know each other via LJ and SPN-love, I'd be down with a mutual friending. If not, no worries. Just feel free to ignore this -- my feelings won't be hurt. :) There was just so much crap going on that I started sucking at keeping up with LJ and flist. No slight was intended.

Either way, your art is breathtaking. I'm so glad I finally had a little time to kick around your LJ and take in the work you've done.

Cheers!

Hey :) No offense taken and hopefully none given. I mostly friend people who write fic (or draw) frequently and have others bookmarked, who I read a lot but who don't write fic as much, rather than having them on my friends list. You're bookmarked :) Given that I dither on my self-made policy quite a bit and have been reading your journal pretty regularly, you'll probably see me back sometime. I enjoy your posts a lot, and I hope you're enjoying yourself in your new city.

No offense taken at all. RL has been intruding on my much preferred fannish escapism, which has been sadly reflected by the lack of fic and fannish-related entries. I just wanted to make sure you knew there was no intentional slight on my part -- keeping up with my flist was one of the first casualties of escaping Florida and moving to Chicago. (Where it's SNOWING right now. SNOWING. I haven't had a chance to watch snow fall in YEARS.)

Anyway, I'll be posting a new SPN vignette today or tomorrow, and after that will be the bloodcult meta and a new SPN fanmix. Beyond that, I have no idea how frequently I'll be updating with fanfic, though. (Hopefully more than I have been. :P) Still, please feel free to pop by in a few days and poke around if any of that rings your bell. Cheers!
