Title: Diplomatic Relations
Rating: G
I have no clue what the premise for this is meant to be, please make up your own awesome story for why the hell this picture would even happen. I mainly just wanted to put Uhura and Kirk in Indian clothes.

ETA: I can haz fic snippet \o/ Courtesy of the lovely [livejournal.com profile] leupagus, there is now a possible explanation of what on earth might be going on here :D

ETA2: Now with title thanks to [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine, who also had this to add (with Uhura quoting Will Rogers):
"There is more to diplomacy than saying 'nice doggie' until you can find a rock, Captain."
"There's a MONKEY IN MY HAIR, Lieutenant."
"Now you know how the rest of us feel, sir."

DWAAAAAAW! Baby monkey is so cute!

Uhura has a great smile, and I love Kirk's expression.

The texture in the clothes turned out really well.

BABY MONKEY!

*ahem* I know I should be giving meaningful and serious commentary about how gorgeous the whole picture is, with Uhura's smile and Kirk's dubious look, and the lovely texture of their clothes and stuff, but all I can really say is:

BABY MONKEY!

Which clearly senses a kindred spirit in Kirk. Heh.

XD Seriously, does this picture look in any way like it's inviting deep and meaningful commentary? The baby monkey was almost an afterthought, but the cuteness was unanticipated so I'm really glad you liked it!

This is very cool. It has to be one of those oldskool episodes where they meet some aliens who are bizarrely like humans from some other time period and they end up in their clothes. I mean, if they can be 1930 Chicago gangster or wearing togas, Indian costumes really aren't any stretch...

From: [personal profile] bratfarrar
To echo everyone else: baby monkey! And the clothes are gorgeous. But I think my favorite bit, oddly enough, is Spock and whoever walking together in the background. For some reason that just finishes off the picture for me.

The Indian costumes are gorgeous--at that filigree (or whatever the proper term is) detail.

"Uhura, can you *please* get the baby monkey away--" Captain Kirk tried ducking out of the way, but the marsoap - which really did look like an Earth primate - chittered pitifully, and in the end Kirk simply sighed and leaned against the tree trunk. "This is officially the most annoying mission we've ever been on," he told her. The marsoap made a little humming sound as it stroked through his hair.

"It's not so bad," she responded, gazing out over the view. Spock was still talking with Helia - or rather, she was talking to him, deeply excited about something that even she couldn't hear at this distance. He looked different in his new clothes, even though he'd chosen ones that most closely resembled his uniform. It had taken all of her and Kirk's powers of persuasion to even get him to change; they'd all been dripping wet and shivering, standing in the chambers of the Great Magistrate with the natives looking worried about their chances of hypothermia. Spock had been worst off, hair plastered to his head and uniform clinging to him, shivering, but he'd only reluctantly changed clothes.

"Not bad - okay, recap here," Kirk said, although he was smiling. "We beam down into a flood basin just as the famous floods are starting, we get all soaked, the natives haven't actually stopped laughing at us since we got here -"

"They were impressed with our transport technology," Uhura pointed out. The marsoap, bored with playing with the Captain's hair (which now looked like he'd been electrocuted) clambered off its branch and into her lap. "Hello, there," she said, stroking its back. It was incredibly soft.

"Yeah, including the part where it couldn't beam us *out*," Kirk grumbled. "I'm firing Scotty once we can get back." He squinted at Spock and Helia. "Are they still talking? I swear, I don't know how he does it." The comment made him blush, and Uhura frowned before realizing why.

"Maybe you should ask him what his secret is," she said, grinning. "I'm sure he could give you lessons on how to treat women as if they *weren't*... what was the phrase I remember?" It was just out of reach, the memory slipping away from her. "The first time I saw you after we went to the Academy, at that party. You called me a--what *was* it?"

"Is that the time when you punched me?"

"Yeah!"

"I don't remember," he lied. "All right, so we've got a few more hours until Scotty does his job and gets the transporters working again. We've talked to the grand poobah--"

"Great Magistrate," Uhura corrected absently. The marsoap was tugging gently on her hair, spinning strands around its tiny fingers and braiding them together.

"Whatever. The trade negotiations will progress once the Reliant gets here, and Spock and Helia, in addition to maybe running away together, are working on the warpfield containment issue their scientists have been having trouble with." He took a deep breath. "All in a day's work. Even if that day did start with almost drowning."

Uhura laughed, and the marsoap touched her lips with one curious hand. "It's a beautiful day now, Captain," she said, picking up the original topic. "Let's just enjoy it."

Kirk rolled his eyes, relaxed against the tree, and followed orders.

I love, love, love this picture - it's making me greedy for more!

Love the sheerness of the wrap, the sheen on the fabrics and the gold embroidery.

Plus, all life forms want to touch Captain Kirk's hair. It's a RULE-- Heisenberg's second uncertainty principle. "I don't know why, but I MUST touch the gold brushy hair. And look in the deep blue eyes. And stare at the lips. And oh, yeah, the HANDS. Not sure why, though."
