The [livejournal.com profile] yuletart reveals were today. I did Temeraire art for [livejournal.com profile] _bounce_, who asked for Laurence and Temeraire having a moment of quiet. First time I ever did Temeraire art and I'm kind of happy with they way it turned out :)

Here's some music to go with this not-quite-an-art-post. It's from the movie Dil Se, (awesome, amazing)music by A.R.Rahman. The song, Chhaiya Chhaiya has a wonderful dance-y rhythm, interesting instruments with fun little interludes in the middle, a lovely male voice and an awesome video to go with it. The song's on my server, so please right click and save :)
Chhaiya Chhaiya:
Download song here.
See the dancing-on-top-of-a-train video on youtube here.
And let me know if you like it!

Dil Se is probably the only recent Bollywood movie I've watched (and that was what, the early 00's? I don't know, I'm ashamed) but the music is spectacular. Weird that you mentioned it because I was listening to Satrangi Re on the way home. But yes yes, Chhaiya Chhaiya is the best track in the film. The drums people, the drums!

I love Rahman. I've followed him since he came out with Roja in 92, and about half or more of my itunes library is his stuff, along with numerous cds of random crap like background scores from movies and jingles he did :D Chhaiya Chhaiya never fails to make me want to dance.

DUDE, that's...a lot of Rahman. I don't think even my obsession with Mohammed Rafi comes close!
I've seen Rahman's name a lot but I've never felt the urge to go out and check some of his other music out. Strange right? Especially considering I really do like his Dil Se stuff.
So maybe you could help actually - what's his other music like? Similar? Or is he just one of those guys who has a wide range? I tend to go for artists who stick to one style but maybe I could swing around a little.

His style is that...he can work well with a lot of styles? I think my favorites of his are the ones where he manages to mix in Indian styles with slightly more Western ideas, as in, I'm not an Indian Classical music fan in its pure form, but I love the vocal skills, and I really enjoy the mixing of that and more beat-based styles when done well. I think one of the earmarks of his music is that he can combine some very complicated instruments/beats and make it come out really melodious rather than a jarring overload of sounds. Some of his songs just take a little while to work on you before it becomes addictive. I actually have a lot of his songs on this lj, just click on the music tag on this post and go for it. I recommend them all though my very first post, Bombay is a special recommendation, especially the Bombay theme. It's gorgeous. I'll take a look at the tag later and if you do happen to like all the ones you're listening to, I'll see what else I can dig up from my favorites if I haven't already posted it here, and if it's a specific type you prefer. BTW, I have a lot of bandwidth, so if you download a whole bunch at a time, it's not a problem.

...um, I guess you didn't anticipate the monster you just unleashed :P I always try to pimp people into A.R.Rahman and am always happy to find new subjects :D

The monster was cool, it actually convinced me to check all the stuff out!

I took my time and listened to some repeatedly to figure out if I would listen to them again - these are the ones I kept: jpeg for my tabs (http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l212/nargynargy/ililibmusic.jpg). Haha, I'm too lazy to type them out. The first tab is Anbae (from Rhythm) in case you're wondering. You're very right, he does have a lot of skill in mixing completely different styles - I was expecting that becuase of Dil Se (tamil and muslim influences right? I'm a bit uneducated in styles but I think hear that) but this was way more eclectic than I imagined! I think the arab style songs really surprised me.

My favourite was actually Ada, so beautiful in it's simplicity. I have a thing for poetic lyrics (hindi songs do that so well GAH) and I just kinda melted at the without land/sky part. Schmoop, I do love it so :D.

ALSO, headdesk, apparently I've been listening to Rahman's compositions for a while now without realising. My older brother, who's more Indian movie inclined than I am, used to play Guzarish and Tu meri Dost Hain all the time! I just didn't know and referred to them as 'Tu meri adhoori pyaas pyaas' and 'Aaja main hawaon pe bithake le chalun' in my head because I'm lame like that (I googled the spellings \o/). I do like those songs a lot :D

So yes, I will be downloading those tabs a little later. I think there are many many factors that make me like a song so this may be hard for you but yeah, I might ask for some other recommendations - especially of the Ada variety? His Dil Se songs are still my favourites though if that helps :).

I just posted two songs that I think you might enjoy, interesting lyrics, not too busy or at least not in a complicated way, and really good voices. I'll just upload a few at a time from songs I haven't yet shared (you've gone through all the ones I posted, right?) that I think you might like :)

I love it too. The story goes that Malaika, the hot lady, almost kind of tipped over in the middle of all the enthusiastic dancing, but it all turned out fine in the end :D The song always makes me want to dance.

i've loved "benny lava" for years and recently Dled a few songs from him (Prabhu Deva is hard to find!) as well as Yara, Hefa and Haifa Wehbe... I see now as well that nearly every Prahbu Deva song I was able to find (a whole... one? huh, i thought i had found two) also has A. R. Rahman listed as an artist in it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean? Isn't Benny lava the youtube parody thing? Prabhu Deva's just the actor, he isn't the singer or composer. And the song Benny Lava's for isn't Rahman's either :) But yes, Rahman has given music to one or two movies that Prabhu Deva's been in.

Wow, gorgeous pic. Hello, sanskrit girl. *waves* Here we meet in a different forum.

So, huh, you like Bollywood, eh? GLOMPS IN MAJOR BIG WAY.

Um.

Dil Se is one of my top five ever favouritest movies yes !!!1111 And 'Chayya Chayya' was the first Bollywood song I loved and adored, before I ever saw one shred of any movie, and I immediately wrote passionate Dom/Orli love (this was in Lord of the Rings rps), and then I saw the film and the picturisation omg, and the entire film, *loves*. Also, 'Chayya Chayya' is sung by my favouritest playback singer, Sukhwinder Singh (see icon!) whose big breakthrough song it was. He won a filmfare award for it.

Hi there!

Oh yes, I definitely like Hindi movies, although nowadays it's easier to follow just the music (A.R.Rahman is a god among men) than movies since theaters showing new releases are hard to come by. I liked the movie Dil Se, but I love the music. And yes, the picturization for that song is absolutely fantastic and Sukhwinder has an amazing voice.

By the way, if you're interested in getting more hindi songs that you may or may not have come across before, feel free to download from my music tag. My Rahman obsession is pretty hard to hide, but there are a few others edging in there too :)
